One of Japan's oldest Buddha statues found in Otsu

OTSU, Japan - The Nara National Museum says Aug. 3 it has found inside a principal statue at Ishiyama Temple in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, four small Buddha statues overlaid with gold. They were made between the seventh and eighth centuries, covering Japan's Asuka, Hakuho and Nara periods. One of the four (far R) is judged to have been made in the Asuka era and is believed to be one of the oldest Buddha statues made in Japan, together with those at Asuka Temple and Horyuji Temple.

Ishiyamadera Temple

The precincts of Ishiyamadera Temple. During the Heian Period (794-1192), the temple was popular among ladies of the aristocracy. It was designated later as the 13th temple in the circuit of 33 Holy Kannon Temples of Western Japan and gained popularity among commoners. The precincts of Ishiyamadera Temple

The Main Hall, Ren'nyo-do, of Ishiyama Temple, looking west from the approach south of Tahodo Pagoda. The approach is paved with stones and has stone lanterns on the north side. An exposed limestone slope is visible to the right of the stone lanterns. Osaka Castle

Osaka Castle, which was built by Hideyoshi where the Ishiyama Honganji Temple once stood, was destroyed by fire during the Osaka Summer Battle. After restoration by Tokugawa Hidetada, the castle tower was destroyed again by lightning. Ishiyamadera Temple

The Ishiyama temple in Otsu city. The founder is Todaiji Ryoben. It used to be a training place of the Kegon Sect and a subtemple of Todaiji, but later it changed to the Shingon Sect. It is the 13th fudasho (a temple where amulets are distributed to pilgrims) of the 33 pilgrimages of western Japan. Also the autumn moon of Ishiyama is one of the 8 scenic spots of Omi. The Mikagedo, seen from the grounds, is shaped in a square and the roof is in thatched a single layer of cypress bark.
